Bargain Hunting #22

We are getting on well with our packing for our move and we move to our new house next month It has been stressful and tiring work however the whole way through I have found ways to save money which has helped us be able to buy some nice things when we move into our new place.

Declutter
When you are moving house you have the opportunity to see everything that has been placed in your house. Whilst I packed I sorted through stuff I needed and didn't need. I had 1 rubbish pile, 1 keep pile and 1 charity pile. Rubbish went into the bin, keep stuff was carefully boxed up and I ensured it was clean before packing and charity was put in a bag or taken to the charity shop. I also managed to sell a few things I found along the way which helped us pay for new things we needed for our new home.

Compare removal hires/van hire
When we looked at moving our belongings we found for us it would be cheaper to hire a van simply because we were only moving up the road. I checked all the websites and compared the price before I decided what company to use. I also looked for discount codes to use to help save a little bit more money.

Packing
Instead of buying expensive boxes for places such as storage companies to move why not visit your local supermarket and see what boxes they can give you? I found the best time of day to do this was the evening as they were restocking the shelves. The boxes are free and all you need is some packaging tape. For 5 small moving boxes we found they where £10 a pack. We have used over 20 boxes and we have not finished packing yet so we have saved a fortune by asking for boxes at the supermarket.

Do your own cleaning
We are leaving the house in a clean and tidy condition ready for the next people to move in. I cleaned as I went which not only saved me time but also money as I cleaned the whole place myself and I do not have to get any one to do it. If you can try and hire a machine to clean things such as carpets and clean them yourselves, hiring a machine will be half the price of getting someone in to clean the carpets for you.

Baby Annabell's Little Brother Review

Since Maxwell was small I always wondered what toys he would enjoy later on in his life. He has always shown an interest in his "boy" toys such as ball's, trains and cars however I have always been happy for Maxwell to explore further than just "boy" toys. I hate the world which we live in where everything is gender specific.

Maxwell was recently sent a Baby Annabell little brother doll by Zapf Creation. I knew as soon as I saw the doll it would bring Maxwell's caring side out and he would love the doll and treat it nicely.

The doll we were sent is the newest version and not the old tradition style doll I remember playing with many moons ago. You are able to buy the doll as Annabell's brother or you can buy it as Annabell herself. Each doll comes with a baby's bottle as well as a dummy which includes a muslin square on it. The doll is very life like and would be perfect for a child expecting a brother or sister as the doll can teach children many skills.

Using the doll is very easy and at the age of 21 months Maxwell is able to understand how to use the doll. When using the accessories, the doll can make sucking noises if the bottle is placed in its mouth, burp if you pat its back, giggle and laugh if you play with the its tummy and makes sucking noises if his dummy is placed in its mouth. One of the key feature's which I loved was if you fill the bottle up with water the dolly will drink it and the water is used to make tears when the baby cries you are then able to use the muslin square on the dummy to wipe the tears away.

The doll has been cleverly made and many things have been thought about including the power shut off. You are able to either manually turn the doll on and off but if the doll stays inactive for a while after use it cuts itself off.

Overall Maxwell was impressed with the doll however the only thing as a parent I would change is that the doll came with batteries. I found myself hunting the house for some batteries and in the end had to wait a day before I could go to the shops to purchase some to use in the doll however this is not a huge worry and does not affect the use of the doll.

I intend on buying Maxwell a pushchair so he is able to push his doll around in, however for now Maxwell is able to take his doll on trips out and is able to play with him around the house.

Johnson's Baby Easy-rinse Foaming Shampoo challenge

Recently Johnson's got in touch to ask would we like to take part in their Johnson’s Baby Easy Rinse Foaming Shampoo hair washing Challenge. To complete the challenge we were sent a bottle of shampoo, a cute frog mirror, some bright wall stickers and an easy to pour jug.

The new Johnsons shampoo has been developed so bathing is fun instead of the nightmare it can become. The new shampoo has a easy to use pump foam shampoo which ensures that only a small amount of shampoo comes out when pumping it onto your hand. This ensures that children are able to wash their own hair with ease instead of relying on parents doing it for them.

Challenge 1 - DIY Fun Factor Maxwell always enjoys having baths but I knew he would enjoy it even more thanks to Johnsons. Maxwell needed to squirt a small amount of shampoo into his hands for this challenge, ready to rub it into his own hair. He did have a little trouble due to his hands being a little wet and his hands skippering about but with a little help from Mummy we managed to complete the challenge.

Challenge 2 - Funky Foam FunWe sat the frog mirror on the edge of the bath so Maxwell was able to see himself in it. This challenge was to make a funky hair style but down to the fact that Maxwell only has a little hair he was only able to spike it up. Maxwell enjoyed rubbing the shampoo into his hair and I was happy to see that it didn't run into his little eyes. Due to the foam sticking well to his hands we found that no shampoo was wasted in the transition from his hands to his head.

Challenge 3 - Rinse Ease
The last step of the challenge was for Maxwell to rinse the foam out of his hair. Maxwell found this challenge the hardest as he found the jug was quite heavy when full and he was unable to tip it over his own head. In the end it was left to me to help him remove the foam out of his hair. With light conditioning ingredients, the easy‐rinse formula in the Johnson’s Baby Shampoo washes out quickly and easily.

Overall
As a parent I was really impressed with the new Johnson's shampoo. It smelt lovely, it was easy to use and even for younger children it is a useful learning tool to help children learn how to wash their own hair. We had great fun completing this challenge and I know Maxwell will continue to wash his hair and learn eventually the last step of learning how to rinse the shampoo out of his hair.

Snapbox Competition

As many of our readers know we are the final moving process and we will soon be moving into our new home. Over the last few days we have been out shopping and we have been looking around for things which will put a unique spin onto our new home.

A month ago I was lucky enough to be sent a Snapbox canvas to review. The quality was fantastic and since having it we have had it on the hallway wall, however when we move it will take pride of place in our lounge. I love canvas prints as they are wonderful at keeping and sharing memories.

Snapbox is now giving Mummy To The Max readers not 1 but 2 chances to win one of their beautiful canvases. All you have to do is simply fill in the easy entry rafflecopter below.

Good Luck!

2 Weeks Of Learning And New Experiences

  1. Maxwell has learnt to sing
  2. Maxwell is signed up to play football
  3. Maxwell is excited about the new house
  4. Maxwell has learnt to eat with a fork (nearly)
  5. Maxwell has been busy doing good turns
Maxwell loves to sit down with us and watch the replays of the X factor on a Saturday and Sunday. He loves to dance to the people singing even if they are bad but he has recently been singing along with people who love to hit the high notes. In a few decades time, you may see Maxwell hitting your screens as the next Justin Beieber.

I have been keen to take Maxwell to more activities as he doesn't get to go to a lot. I found that at a local children's group they have a group called Saints Tots and I have asked if Maxwell is able to join, the term after his birthday. Saints Tots is a group for toddlers to learn how to play football and I think Maxwell would benefit from going, not only to mix with children but also to have fun and learn some skills.

Maxwell has been helping me this week choose housey bits for our new house. Maxwell has a Disney cars room and at first I did question weather to change the whole room however after some thought I thought it would be best to leave the room as it is and get a few more accessories to make his room extra special. I am looking to buy him a new book case, some more storage so he can store things such as his train track and I am looking to buy him some new bedding.

This week I have been encouraging Maxwell to eat with a fork and he is nearly there. If Maxwell was able to eat with a fork, I think it would encourage him to eat more food. He has recently got the hang of eating with a spoon and eats things like yoghurt's and rice pudding confidently.

Over the last few weeks we have been clearing the house ready for the move and Maxwell has been doing some good turns. He donated a large bag of bibs to one of my old friends and he donated 4 black bin bags of toys to one of Ben's friends who is expecting their first baby. We have also been writing cards to our Post Pal friends and with Maxwell's help we have donated a few bags of old clothes to charity.

Having Our Own House

Currently we rent our house and we have lived here for over a year however our landlady has decided to sell up which means we are left without a home. Its a horrid process and I can honestly say it is one of the most stressful time's in my life. One day I would love to own my own home so I always have the knowledge of knowing I will never have to move and live in fear that my rented home will be sold and we will have to find somewhere new to live.

The moving process when living in rented accommodation is extremely expensive. We have had to find deposit money, pay admin fees, pay our rent upfront and even pay for things such as vans for the move. Our new home is a new referb and does not have much in except the basics, which means we will have to also pay for things such as curtains and lampshades which can also cost a lot.

When Maxwell is older I can not wait to go back to work full time and get a good income so Ben and I are able to afford our own home. It would take a few years for us to save money so we could get a mortgage but it would be worth it just to know we had a home and it was ours.

I have not really thought about where I would like to move to if I had the opportunity to have my own home however I think as a family we would like to stay in our local area which is the New Forest. I love to see what is on the market and recently I have been keeping a eye out on country houses for sale. Although I don't think we could afford something so beautiful and expensive, I can dream and maybe it will become a reality if I won the lottery.

Woolly and Tig - One Step at a Time Review

Are you looking for a DVD to teach your child about day to day real life scenarios?
Fun, education and includes cute characters?

Abbey Home Media has released a new DVD for Woolly and Tig - One Step at a Time. Woolly and Tig is a programme which Max watches regularly and enjoys. The DVD was released on the 16th September and is a great DVD to add to any family collection.

Woolly and Tig are a spider and a girl who have lots of adventures together. Tig finds new experiences scary and her favourite toy gives her confidence to continue her day.  Each episode is narrated by Tig as she tells viewers about the world around her and what she gets up to.

Each episode of the DVD is aimed at scenario your child may have to deal with in the future, from shopping in the supermarket to being scared of water Woolly and Tig try and assure the viewer these scenarios will work out okay.

The DVD was over an hour long, and contains 15 episodes all which last 5 minutes: One Step at a Time, Timmy's Monsters, Splash, The Painting Day, Museum of Inspiration, The Dog, Bus Ride, Supermarket, The Hospital, Sleep Over, Busy, Big Stomps, The Dance Class, The Clown and The Party. Maxwell loves the characters - especially Woolly as he is very bright and friendly.

Overall the DVD got the big thumbs up from me. The DVD teaches children not to be scared about day to day life situations and helps them build confidence about the world around them. Although Maxwell is a little too young to understand such situations he was still able to follow what was happening and as he grows up I hope he can understand and learn from the DVD. I liked the short episodes as we are able to view them when we have limited time.

Exciting News Update!

Some of you may have noticed we have been a little quieter over on Twitter and on here this week however we have some exciting news to share with our readers....

We are MOVING!

Last week we had a phone call to tell us our landlady was looking to sell our property. We have lived here for a year and a half and at first we had mixed emotions about moving but after a long think we knew it was the push in the right direction that we needed as a family.
For a while I have been looking at properties to move to. I have wanted a garden for Maxwell to play in and enjoy and I wanted to move somewhere where I could go out and access things easier than the property we live in now.
We spent a few days looking for somewhere to move to and we managed to find a place. Today all the paperwork has gone through and in less than a month we will be moving to a new 2 bed home with a little garden for Maxwell.
We are all thrilled and excited to be moving. We are still going to live in the New Forest, just a short 10 minute journey from where we live now!

We are excited to be opening a new chapter in our lives and cant wait to share some more of our memories with out readers like we have in the past year.

Treat Republic Wooden Keepsake Box Review

Are you looking for a personalised gift?
Something for that special someone to treasure?

I love making memories but most of all I enjoy keeping memories. Since Maxwell was born I have kept a lot of his baby things which I can not bare to part with however they were sat in a draw as I had no where special to keep them. This all changed when Treat Republic recently sent us a lovely wooden keepsake box to keep all Maxwell's baby memory's in.

Treat Republic offer two different designs of wooden boxes, a giraffe design and a acon design. We choose the Acon design to review as I felt the design would grow with Maxwell and go well in his room. I was able to have the box personalised so it had Maxwell's full name on. Normally I have a little trouble having Maxwell's full name printed on things as it is very long however Treat Republic had no problem putting the name on the box for me.

When the box arrived I was extremely impressed by the quality. The box was well made and had a smooth finish. There were no rough edges, no sharp corners and the acon design looked beautiful. The box had a easy to use clip clasp opening which ensures all the items in the box are safely kept. The box is a good size and I found I was able to put a lot of items in it.

These boxes would make a lovely gift for young children and their parents. Looking back now I would have appreciated this gift when Maxwell was first born however I also believe they would be fantastic for christenings, birthdays and even Christmas.

Overall I am impressed with Treat Republic as a company. The box was sent out fast and I found the company to be really friendly.

You can find more about Treat Republic on their website, Facebook and Twitter.

Andrex - Being Eco Friendly

Andrex Eco is working with renowned eco-designer Oliver Heath to educate us Brits about the ‘little things’ we can all do around our homes to help us live sustainably. Andrex Eco recently sent me a bundle of goodies which are Oliver’s top items that make eco-living easy in the home. We were asked to use the items in our daily life and see what impact they made on us.

Mummy Blog, Parenting Blog, Mummy To The Max

Andrex provided me with the following items:
  • Andex Eco toilet paper
  • Recycling bin for the bathroom
  • Hippo water saving bag
  • Canvas bag
  • Shower timer
  • Candle
I Found
I normally buy branded toilet paper with my grocery shop however I never thought about the impact it would have on the world around us. I normally go for what is on offer however since we have had Andrex Eco toilet paper in our lives I will think more when doing my shop. The Andrex toilet roll is as soft and friendly as any toilet paper however it is eco. The toilet paper is sustainable toilet tissue made from a completely new and innovative combination of sustainably sourced fibres; 90% recycled fibre and 10% natural bamboo. The packaging is also 100% recycled.

Mummy Blog, Parenting Blog, Mummy To The Max

With Ben and I the only people using the bathroom regularly in the house we find we tend to recycle the plastic and the cardboard tubes that the loo roll comes on however sometimes we can forget.  This week we simply added the bin, we were sent in the bathroom and at the end of the week we recycled all the empty toilet tubes and old plastic packaging. Adding a bin to the bathroom ensured we were disposing recycled items properly.

Most toilets don’t need to use a full cistern to flush effectively and we were sent a Hippo water saver to try out. Since installing the bag I have found that it saves us 2-3 litres of water per flush. It is a simple bag which is easy to fit. I love the bag as not only does it save us money but it also means we are helping the environment.

We were sent a lovely strong canvas bag which I was really happy about. I used it when I went to fetch a few goodies from the shop this week that I would sometimes have to double bag when using a carrier bag to ensure the plastic did not split on my way home. The government are now telling people by 2014 they would like supermarkets to charge 5p per plastic bag to help the environment. If this does come into force I would suggest to any of my readers to get themselves a lovely strong canvas bag which they can use over and over again, it will not only save you money but it is also very eco friendly.

Ben and I love long showers as well as baths. We recently stopped having baths all the time as we simply could not afford the water bill after we were put on a metre however sometimes when taking a shower we manage to take a extra long one which not only affects our water bill but the environment. We were sent a shower timer in our box of goodies and the timer was my favourite item. It has been the most used item in the house since it has arrived and I would reccomend anyone looking to help the environment and save themselves some money to get one.

Mummy Blog, Parenting Blog, Mummy To The Max

I rarely get any me time at night but on the occasional night that I do I love to sit down and relax. In my box of goodies I found a beautiful candle which will not only send me into a relaxed mode but also will save my electricity bills as I will not be forced to turn bright lights on, instead I am able to light up my room with pretty candles.

Conclusion
Overall this week has been a real eye opener. I did not know that a series of small steps could help the environment as well as my own bills. I think being eco is something we should all look at, to make the world a better place and keep it well for the sake of our children and their children!

Silentnight Sleep Clinic

Sleepless nights costing UK economy more than £600 million
- Birmingham is the capital of sleep-related absence

Sleep-deprived workers take six million sick days a year with the cost to the UK economy
£611 million, a new study has revealed.
One in five (19%) admitted they had taken a sickie because of a bad night's sleep,
according to the survey of 2,044 people by Silentnight.

Only 13% said they slept peacefully while those kept awake blamed the thought of having
to get up early the next day (32%), money worries (26%) and a stressful day at work
(26%).

Almost a fifth (19%) said that arguing with a loved one regularly affected their bed time.

More women (20%) than men (16%) miss work due to sleepless nights with Birmingham
the worst place in the UK for sleep-related absences, followed by Glasgow and Liverpool.

Unsurprisingly, one-sixth of workers choose to catch up on sleep while travelling on public
transport but 7% admitted to falling asleep while at their desk and 4% during a meeting.

The study also revealed how almost half of people (44%) never enjoy a lie-in - even at
weekends - with most lie-ins lasting less than 30 minutes.

Over three quarters (79%) of those surveyed admitted to experiencing personal sleep
issues, with the most common problems being snoring (51%), excessive sweating (41%)
and sleep talking (30%).

Problems caused by a lack of sleep included decreased concentration levels (31%), bad
health (28%), grumpiness towards partners (21%) and arguments at home (11%).

Dr Nerina Ramlakhan, Silentnight’s sleep expert and a sleep therapist at Capio Nightingale
Hospital, said: “Sleep is crucial to our health and well-being and it is clear from the
findings that lack of quality sleep is making a real impact on people’s lives - from absence
from work, decreased concentration levels and arguments in the home.

“A few simple steps can make a huge difference to getting a good night’s sleep.
Switching off from work and social media channels an hour before bed, taking the time to
unwind, eating a balanced diet and making sure that our sleep environment is as tranquil
as possible are all positive steps in the right direction.

“This is why I have joined forces with Silentnight to launch its first online Sleep Clinic. I will
be providing personalised sleep plans for ten recruits suffering from everyday sleep
issues. The Sleep Clinic is aimed at educating people across the UK that a few simple
techniques can help the nation get a great night’s sleep every night.”

Working with resident sleep expert, Dr Nerina, Silentnight is searching for ten people with
everyday sleep issues to take part in a four week Sleep Clinic.

Each participant will receive a personalised sleep plan from Dr Nerina, a Silentnight bed,
tailored to their specific sleep issue, and asked to provide feedback about their
experiences via weekly video diaries hosted on the Silentnight website. All of the
information and sleep plans will also be available for people to follow along at home.

Nick Booth, Marketing Director at Silentnight, said: “From our partnership with Dr Nerina,
to the research and development that we invest into our product range, at Silentnight we
are dedicated to helping the nation get a great night’s sleep.”

Bargain Hunting #21

You are able to save large amounts of money through the year by making your own cleaning solutions. Sometimes the initial expense can be a couple of pounds but normally you are able to use the item over and over again which in turn will save you money.

Clean Your Oven - You will need baking Soda and water.
Mix the baking soda and water together, this will make a medium/thick paste. Coat the inside of your oven with a medium/thick paste made from water and baking soda and let it stand overnight. In the morning wear gloves and clean the dirt off with a scour. Go over the oven using a damp cloth.

Clogging Drains - You will need baking soda and boiling water.
Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda into the drain, followed by 2 cups of boiling water the drain should unblock however if it does not then pour the baking soda down the drain again with a 1/2 cup of vinegar and cover tightly. Allow the vigorous fizzing of the chemical reaction to break up the dirt. Once complete pour around 4 litres of water to make sure it is clear.

Clean Windows And Mirrors - You will need white vinegar, water, a spray bottle and newspaper.
Mix 2 tablespoons of white vinegar with 4 litres of water and add the solution into a spray bottle. Squirt on to the area which needs to be cleaned and then scrub with newspaper.

Wooden Floors - You will need vinegar and a spray bottle.
Make up a solution of 1/4 cup white vinegar and 30 ounces of warm water. Put the solution into a spray bottle, then spray on a towel until lightly damp, mop your floors so that any dirt that has formed is scrubbed away.

Spatone Apple Competition

Are you feeling tired and in need of a boast?
Lacking energy or motivation?

Whilst pregnant with Maxwell I felt very tired all the time. I had no energy and all I wanted to do was sit down or sleep. I went on a routine trip to my midwife and asked her why I was feeling like this and after a few test I was told I was suffering with low iron levels.

Iron is an essential mineral for the human body and is required to transport oxygen around the body to ensure vitality and energy release. I was advised by my midwife at the time to improve my diet and add things such as spinach and broccoli which have high iron levels or use Spatone Apple.

Spatone Apple is a liquid iron supplement with natural Spatone spa water which is sourced from the Welsh mountains and has had added Vitamin C to aid the iron absorption. It is great tasting and can be drunk on its own or added to a drink to make a fruitier drink. The sachets that the Spatone comes in are very tiny and you are able to take them anywhere.

After a week of using the Spatone Apple I was feeling much more energetic and less tired. Since I have given birth to Maxwell I have continued to use Spatone and have seen what a difference it has made to me. I am no longer tired however I am much more happy and more alert and ready for the day ahead each day.

Spatone Apple is available from Boots priced £9.95 for 28 sachets (4 weeks supply). For more info visit www.spatone.com

Spatone have kindly allowed me to run a competition on Mummy To The Max. One of our readers will win a fantastic prize of a 3 month’s supply of Spatone Apple.

A Week Of Learning And New Experiences

  1. Maxwell has learnt to carry shopping bags and pack the contents away
  2. Maxwell has been preparing for the winter
  3. Maxwell has been building
  4. Maxwell is obsessed with eyes and ears
  5. Maxwell has a great aim
Maxwell is always extremely helpful however this week he has learnt a new helpful skill. Every week I get or food shopping delivered, simply because it is difficult to reach the supermarket as Ben works long hours and also I find that I tend to spend less than I would if I went shopping in a supermarket.
Normally Ben is in bed when the food shopping comes so it is left for Maxwell and I to bring the shopping up the stairs and pack it away however this week Maxwell decided he would carry all the bags from the landing into the kitchen and then help put the shopping away.

Maxwell is preparing for the winter. This week we took him shopping and got him some new bits to keep him warm. We settled on getting him some new dungarees, a jumper and some funky long sleeved t shirts. I already managed to buy him his winter coat and some other bits in the last 2 months, so we do not have much left to get.

Maxwell has really come on leaps on bounds with learning how to build his Megabloks. Only a few months ago he struggled to make a tower with the blocks however Maxwell is now able to make large towers as well as creative shapes.

Maxwell is obsessed with eyes and ears. He loves to touch and feel them and loves to flick his Daddy's ears and poke me in my eyes. Maxwell has been learning so much recently.

Maxwell loves playing with his ball recently. He has developed amazing aim and sometimes even throws the ball at you without looking. He has also stared to learn to kick it. I am really proud that he has picked up these skills so well, especially at his age.

Abney & Teal - Faraway Island DVD Review

Are you looking for a fun DVD to entertain your children?
Short episodes, funny characters and a adventure

On the 9th September 2013 Abbey Home Media are releasing the new DVD, The Adventures of Abney and Teal - Faraway Island. Yesterday Maxwell and I sat down on a wet weather day and watched the DVD together. I was excited to see Maxwell's thoughts on the DVD as he has watched the programme on Cbeebies many times.

Abney and Teal is about two animated rag dolls named Abney and Teal who live in a park, in the middle of the busy, big city. Abney lives in a hut at the base of a tree and Teal sleeps in the branches of the tree. They share their island home with a group of friendly and hilarious characters, and together they are always ready for an adventure.

Maxwell enjoyed the DVD, he has turned into a TV addict recently and loves to lie along our sofa, eating a snack and watching programmes. On the DVD there are many funny moments throughout as well as lots of fun and adventure for children to enjoy. I found that the story line was easy enough for the children to follow and it teaches the value of friendship, adventure and fun.
The film features 8 episodes. Each episode lasts about 11 minutes which is a good length of time for most children to be able to sit still and enjoy a programme. The show is aimed at 3 to 6 years old, although Maxwell is a little young just yet, he enjoyed following the film and loved the fun characters.

If you are buying the DVD your children will be in for a treat as the DVD comes with some fun stickers for your children to enjoy. Maxwell loves stickers and stuck the stickers to his T-shirt with a little help from me. The remaining stickers will go in his craft box for him to enjoy at a later date.

Overall I would definitely reccomend this DVD  to parents.  It is perfect for wet weather days and I loved that all the programmes were only 11 minutes long as this means children do not have to sit down and watch all the episodes at once, they are able to go back and watch the DVD at a later date.

At the beginning of the year I wrote a prize wish list which I wanted to win for our family before Christmas. I have had not had so much time to enter competitions recently however, I have had some fantastic wins this year.

Help a brave British boy aged 13 years in his fight against brain cancer

Today a  email popped up in my inbox and I felt like I had to publish it here on my blog. I figured if only one person listened to the story which I am about to publish than that was one more person who knew this brave, courageous little boys story.

James Green, or ‘Jamie’ as he prefers to be called, is from Amersham in Buckinghamshire and has been diagnosed with a highly aggressive malignant type of brain cancer. His family and friends are desperately trying to raise £250,000 by 01 October 2013 for him to have life saving treatment in America.

Jamie’s story

On 19 July 2013 Jamie’s parents received the devastating news that their only son had a lesion within his cerebellum and required an immediate operation to remove it. Jamie was transferred to The John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford where he received emergency surgery to remove the cancerous growth from his brain. The tumour measured over 4cm in size.

Following the operation a second blow hit the family. Jamie was diagnosed with Medulloblastoma - an aggressive type of malignant brain tumour and life limiting condition. Jamie’s oncology team reported that whilst there were no physical signs of other tumours, the scans had identified that possible cancer cells had travelled to the base of Jamie’s spine (a condition known as metastatic).

The outlook was suddenly very grim as Jamie faced an aggressive programme of chemotherapy followed by radiotherapy. Two weeks after the initial brain surgery Jamie began his treatment plan.

Jamie’s parents, having discussed the likely side effects of traditional radiotherapy treatment with their son’s oncologist, began researching all types of treatment. They were introduced to UK charity Kids n Cancer and soon discovered proton treatment, which is based around similar principals of applying radiation to the entire brain and spine but crucially it is much kinder and less harmful to the body, especially that of a developing child. It creates little to no collateral damage to other organs, healthy tissue or bone structure, compared to traditional radiotherapy.

The use of Proton therapy is relatively new and therefore whilst the NHS recognise the benefits it can bring, the UK’s treatment centres are not due to be completed until 2016. The sad fact is that this is too late to save Jamie. Jamie’s parents have received encouraging news that several proton treatment facilities in the USA are able to accepttheir son for treatment. Such treatment must be paid for in advance and the NHS is unable to fund it.

Anita Green, Jamie’s mother spoke of the fundraising campaign: 'We understand that times are tight for many people across the country and all we ask is that if you are unable to donate in support of our cause, please, please, please, share this with your family, friends and colleagues'

How to help:

This story is heart breaking, if this was your child how would you feel? Please donate anything you possibly can, nothing is too little.

A Week Of Learning And New Experiences

  1. Maxwell had a lovely day out at the farm
  2. Maxwell has a love for music
  3. Maxwell enjoys playing with water
  4. Maxwell likes to store things
  5. Maxwell had a surprise in the post
At the weekend we visited Finkley Down Farm, you are able to read my review here. Maxwell enjoyed the farm and it was lovely to see him run around and have a fantastic day out. Maxwell has a huge love of animals and I loved seeing how excited he got around them. I loved seeing him learn new things on the day and I can not wait to go on more family days out with him in the future.

Maxwell has had a love for music since he was born however over the last month, I have seen Maxwell develop a love for music even more. Maxwell enjoys to dance in front of the TV, sing along to his favourite songs and loves to play with his musical instruments. Me and Ben have a love for music so I hope that as Maxwell grows up he shares our love.

Maxwell is a water baby and loves to have baths. This week however I have let him have tubs of water to play with. He loves to splash the water everywhere including over himself and he also loves to put his hands under a running tap. We have fun adding bubbles into the water and Maxwell also loves to add glitter.

Maxwell  has a habit of storing things. We recently were sent a little green bin and since we were sent it Maxwell has used it to store his Playmobil people. He also enjoys storing his Megabloks and things which come off his toys. The bin is always put in a safe place and no one is allowed to move it.

Around a month ago I was lucky enough to win a Chupa Chups lolly wheel. We had waited and waited for it to come and it finally arrived yesterday. As you can see Maxwell is amazed by it however I think he is too young to be eating them and there is also a safety risk. Does any one have any ideas with what I can do with the wheel rather than me and Ben eating them all?

Huggies Little Swimmers Hygiene Mat

Are you looking for a new swimming essential?
Child friendly, bright and fun?

The summer has been hot and Maxwell and I have enjoyed trips to the swimming pool. Maxwell loves to splash around and cool down in the heat however one of the main things that puts me off taking Maxwell swimming is all the fuss of getting him dressed, washed and dry as well as sorting myself out and having to worry about what is around him. Huggies recently sent me their new swim mat and I was amazed at how much it has helped me over the last month.

The swim mat we were sent is a non-slip mat which folds into a small waterproof pouch. It is the perfect size to throw into a changing bag as it doest take much room up. It is child friendly as it is bright and is decorated as a frog and it is very eye catching. Maxwell loves the frog design and often points to the frogs big googly eyes.

The material of the mat is quite thick and it is slightly cushioned which provides comfort to your child. The mat is machine washable which is a huge plus as it can be thrown into the washing machine after each swim along with other washing such as towels and swimming clothes.

Whilst I have been getting myself ready after our swim I have been placing Maxwell on the mat with a little toy and he has sat there playing quietly. When using the mat I am confident that Maxwell is not going to have to be uncomfortable or have to sit on a cold, wet, dirty floor.

The only thing I would like to see on the mat is a small raise so that Maxwell is able to rest his head more comfortably when he is laying down. I would also like to see Huggies bring the mat's out in different animal characters as they only offer to at the moment - The frog and penguin designs.

I have found that the mat has come in handy for other things such as when Maxwell gets out of his paddling pool he is able to step onto his mat rather than the grass. I have also found it great to take to the beach when we go paddling as he can simply step back on the mat rather than stepping in dirty seaweed or sharp shells.

Olympian and swim teacher Karen Pickering has come up with some fantastic swimming tips to keep your child happy and safe when swimming.

TOP TIPS FOR BABY SWIMMING

It’s never too early – your baby doesn’t need to be immunised before swimming so get them to the pool as soon as you feel ready

Planning your swimming trip is essential for ensuring a stress-free session. Put your swimming costume on under your clothes before heading out so you can focus your attention on changing your little one at the pool

Always put a swim nappy on your little one before going into the pool. Huggies® Little Swimmers® are made from absorbent materials that won’t swell in the water, have unique leak guards to avoid little accidents escaping and easy open sides to make change time as hassle free as possible

Stay by your little one at all times – not only is it safe, but it also helps to form a close bond

Maintain eye contact with your little one; smile, relax and drop down to the same level – your baby will love seeing you splashing too!

You may want to have your partner or a friend with you when you first start swimming, just whilst you get used to handling a wet baby – or even better, join a baby swim school like Water Babies to help with both yours and your baby’s confidence in the water

One of the best ways to get into the pool is to lay your baby safely on the poolside, enter the water and then lift them in – your Water Babies swim teacher can teach you the best way to do this

Keep your little one safe and hygienic at the pool side and avoid any trips or falls with the durable non-slip Huggies® Little Swimmers® Hygiene Mat, available in fun frog or penguin designs!

The Huggies swim mat is priced £6.99, it’s currently available from Boots, Tesco and Amazon. For more information please visit Huggies website.

I did not receive any financial reward for writing this review.
However we did receive the product for review purposes. Everything written in this post is my own, honest opinion.

Finkley Down Farm Review

Finkley Down Farm Park is a family run children's farm with all the character of a traditional farm plus indoor and outdoor play, sheep racing and a lot of things to see and do. At Finkley Down Farm Park, you can feed the goats, cuddle a rabbit, or stroke a baby chick.

Yesterday Maxwell and I went on a trip with my sister Rachel and her partner Rob. We went to Andover to visit Finkley Down Farm Park. Before we set off we packed a packed lunch and some essentials which we needed and set off on our journey. The journey was approximately a 50 min journey each way from the New Forest where we live.

Parking
The parking is free at Finkley Down Park. The car park is a gravel park which is large and clean however when it is busy a large grass area is opened making more room for visitors to park.

Prices
I found the price to enter the park to be reasonable. There is a lot of things to see and do at the park and you could easily spend a full day there. If you are in the military or if you visit the park after school hours you can get a reduced price rate.

SAVER Ticket - 2 Adults & 2 Children £31.00
Adults £8.95
Senior Citizens, Students & Disabled Adults £8.50
Children (aged 2 - 16 years) £7.95
Children with disability and carer £7.50

Animals
Maxwell had a lovely time seeing, feeding and touching the animals. We found that they were all friendly, well kept and in clean living conditions. Maxwell got to feed the goats, touch a baby chick and feed the pigs. He also got to see a lot of chickens, cows and ponies.
In the morning Maxwell got to handle a chick. The chicks were tiny and were placed in baskets and handed around for the children to touch. Maxwell was scared of it first but in the end I think he liked them.
In the afternoon we were in for a treat when we got to see the sheep race around a track. The sheep racing was made fun for the children as they were allowed to pick there favourite sheep which were named after racing cars. Maxwell's sheep won and he was given a sticker as a reward. The sheep racing was fun to see and it is truly a must see.

You are able to see a full list of the activities that they offer at Finkley down below.

Play
There is a lot of things suitable for children to play on at Finkley Down Farm. I was a little wary at first of letting Maxwell play on things as he is quite young however I was amazed at the amount of things the farm had to offer for smaller children.
There is a Little Tikes area which was very large. We went on a busy day and there was still enough things for Maxwell to go on and enjoy. The Little Tikes play area included slides, trampolines and see saws.
Around the park there are tractors for children to sit on, swings for smaller children to be pushed in and small tractor carts for children to ride around on.
There are also fun things for older children to enjoy. There are large trampolines, climbing frames and a fun zip wire which parents also enjoyed playing on.
There was a inside soft play area, however it was quite busy and as Maxwell is quite small I did not want him to get hurt inside the play area so we did not try the soft play area out however it looked fab and if we visit again when Maxwell is a little older, I would love to explore.

Facilities
There were enough toilets around the park for us to use as well as baby changing. The toilets were clean and the baby changing room was child friendly with a lot of bins and space to change you child.
There were a lot of places to wash your hands round the park which I found important. Each washing facility had soap, towels and bins to dispose the towels in.
There was lots of benches to sit down and there was a designated area to sit and eat in. There were a lot of bins and tables placed in this area and there were some trees placed around the area which would give shade on hot days.

Overall
We had a fantastic day at Finkley Down Park. There is something suitable for all ages to enjoy. The farm was clean and was safe and friendly for children visiting. It was well set out and I believe Finkley Down Farm had spent a lot of time thinking on the layout of the park.
The park is a must visit if you are in the area visiting and are looking for something to do.

I was not compensated for this post. I just wanted to share my experiences with the readers of my blog.
