The Best Of 2013

To finish off the year I thought I would finish the end of the year on a high and write down 5 of my most happiest, memorable moments of this year which have happened to Mummy To The Max.  I hope you have enjoyed reading our blog and you are looking forward to sharing some new memories with us in 2014.

Being sponsored to go to Britmums by Silentnight and working with Silentnight in 2013 - This year I was amazed when I was given the opportunity to go to Britmums. Being quite a new blogger and not as established as others around me I was so happy to be picked. I had such an amazing time there and I learnt so many new things not to mention I made some fantastic blogging friends that I now talk to every day! Silentnight have continued to support me this year and I am looking forward to working with them in 2014.

Being picked as Tomy Official  Blogger - This year I was surprised to have the opportunity with Maxwell to become a Tomy Official  Blogger. Maxwell has had a opportunity not many children his age have had and I truly want to thank Tomy for all there support and help they have given us, not to mention the parcels we have gone on to receive from them.

We went to London - I love going to London but due to living in Southampton we don't normally get a lot of time to visit. This year I have been lucky to visit 3 times. My favourite visit was when me and Ben went together and we were able to review the London Eye. We had a great time and it was very memorable.

Showing my readers deals - I really enjoy finding deals, freebies and bargains and  I have really enjoyed sharing them with my readers this year. Hopefully 2014 will be even better and I will be able to save you all even more money!

Having the opportunity to try different things - This year has seen us try lots of different things we may not have tried in the past. We have tried lots of new foods, toys, clothes and we even have had fun visiting places. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the lovely brands we have worked with.

Blogging My Way To A Free Christmas 2014

2013 was a fairly cheap Christmas for me. Most of the present I gave to people were either won, were freebies, recycled or were cheap however I still think I could have done better and got Christmas for much less. 2014 I have set my target to get everything for Christmas under £100, the £100 which I am using for Christmas 2013 was won this year (December) through a competition so the Christmas will still be costing £0 of my own money IF I manage to stay in budget.

I am staying hopeful that I will reach my target and every month I will be writing a post to update my readers on how my Free Christmas 2014 is going. I plan to:
  • Collect as many reward points as possible - Tesco, Boots or Nectar... I will be making sure I get as many points as I possibly can.
  • Use websites such as Top Cashback  - When I make purchases on the Internet, I get a  % of money back through the purchase. Nearer Christmas or through out the year I have the option to swap the Cashback into cash or vouchers for me to spend in stores such as Boots.
  • Collect as many coupons as I can for food products to enable me to get lots of snacks/food in for free.
  • Win as many items as I can which will help me get Christmas for free. This includes gifts, vouchers to buy products with and even food items.
  • Use sites such as Instagc which reward me in vouchers for doing simple tasks such as watching videos and listening to the radio. Each month I am hoping to make at least £10+.
Overall I am aiming high. I am sure through out the year I will find other websites/ways to make a few pounds which I will use for Christmas and I am hoping to keep my readers updated on this.

I have already managed to get a few bargains which include 2 DVD's for Maxwell which cost me just 50p each which were on a supermarket glitch. The DVD'S will make perfect stocking fillers.

Wish me luck and I hope you enjoy following my journey! Here's to Christmas 2014!

Christmas 2013

Christmas 2013 was the 3rd Christmas Maxwell had got to celebrate. Unfortunately Maxwell and I were both ill, I was at the end of the cold which had bugged me for over a week and Maxwell was at the start of his cold however we both did not allow this to ruin our Christmas.

Ben worked all over Christmas which meant we missed having a lot of family time together. On Christmas eve Maxwell was given his Christmas Eve box which he really enjoyed. He loved the chocolate which he got to nibble on as he watched his Christmas films and he loved having a nice hot bubble bath at the end of the day with his new towel and his "special" bubble bath. He loved getting in to his new PJ's and snuggling down under the cover whilst I read him his Christmas book. Overall we had a fantastic Christmas Eve and once tucked into bed Santa came with lots of treats!

Christmas morning was a lazy one. We did not get up until 9am and once up we let Maxwell enjoy opening his presents.  I was surprised to see this year that Maxwell actually knew how to unwrap his presents and he loved attacking the paper whilst he excitedly unwrapped. Maxwell loved unwrapping his sesame street toys and he screamed in delight when he saw he had a new wooden puzzle train.

After breakfast we got ready to go and celebrate Christmas with our families. Each year we split our day so that we spend time with both our families. First we visited Ben's family and we also had our Christmas lunch there. We had a nice time there and then we rushed off to spend the remainder of the day with my family. Everyone was very generous with their gifts and Maxwell especially loved the Noahs ark my sister gifted him and a Vtech robot my parents gifted him.

On boxing day we spent the day as a family of 3 and we went shopping.  Our day was sadly shortened as Ben had work however we managed to get a few bargains and we enjoyed spending out day together. When we arrived home, Maxwell managed to spend some well deserved time playing with his Noah's ark and his new Megablok truck.

The following day we spent at my sisters, we had a lovely dinner there and Maxwell and I managed to catch some more of our family which we had not got round to seeing at Christmas. We had a brilliant day and Maxwell enjoyed opening more presents.

Overall we had a lovely Christmas. I just wish Ben had a little more time off so we could have got to enjoy the run up and the few days after however I am sure this will change next year. We are looking forward to Christmas 2014 and I have already started present preparing!

Christmas At Longdown Dairy Farm

On my Birthday this year, we thought it would be nice to take Maxwell somewhere that little bit magical. For weeks and weeks I had been planning on a nice trip and finally I came up with the idea of taking him to our local farm to meet Father Christmas.

The local farm is not that far away from us. It is around a 10 minute drive and is situated in Ashurst which is in the New Forest. The farm is called Longdown Dairy Farm. I had heard nothing but good reviews from other parents so I was excited to go and see what all the fuss was about.

Upon arrival we parked in a large car-park. The car-park was large and allowed many visitors to park in it. There were no set bays which enabled us plenty of space for Maxwell to get in and out of the car which I find is always important. From the car park the farm is a short walk across the road.

Once arriving at the farm we were shown into a marquee where activities were set out for children to have fun with. There were a long row of benches for people to sit down on and small table which let people buy refreshments. Maxwell loved the activities which were set out for him. One being a huge wooden standing cow with wooden boards that he lifted up and was able to see pictures of animals as well as facts about the farm.

After Maxwell had enjoyed the activities we were shown into the Christmas barn. First of all we were able to sit down and enjoy holding chicks. Unfortunately  Maxwell was not keen on them and we ended up putting the chick back however it was a wonderful experience and perhaps when Maxwell is a little older he will enjoy chicks more.

We then had the opportunity to meet a few other animals which included sheep, a donkey, goats and a turkey. Maxwell adored the donkey and spent a while touching him and stroking him. Maxwell was sad to leave the animals as he was called to go into Santa's Grotto by a giant elf.

Once in the Grotto we were able to sit next to Santa and we were given a small gift by the elf. Santa tried to talk to Maxwell however Maxwell seemed a little scared by him and was reduced to tears meaning we eventually had to leave Santa in his grotto however Maxwell was impressed with his present which was a lovely board book which will help him learn colours as he grows.

Overall we had a lovely time at the farm. There were a lot of things to see and do for children including colouring and dressing up and I would definitely reccomend it to families. We paid around £10 to get in which included 3 adults and 1 child which I found was quite reasonable.

I am hoping to take Maxwell again next year, hopefully he will no longer be scared of Santa!

Christmas Eve Box For A Toddler

This year I decided I really wanted to start a Christmas tradition with Maxwell. I want him to grow up remembering certain things we did each year as a family and keep the tradition going as he grows. I want him to remember small things which bought him a little joy and happiness around the festive season and remember it through his adult years. Some people frown upon this tradition but I simply think its a brilliant idea, the idea being Christmas Eve Boxes!

A Christmas Eve Box is something which I shall be gifting Maxwell on Christmas Eve each year. It will contain items which  I think he will enjoy receiving just before the big day of Christmas, things which will get him into the Christmas spirit, things which will keep him entertained, things that will help him pamper himself as well as a few things which he will enjoy.

Maxwell will be receiving these items in his Christmas Eve box this year -
  1. A projection torch - Perfect for having lots of fun with and creating magical pictures on the wall the night before Santa arrives.
  2. A Key for Santa - Great for those who do not have a fire place and for those who's children wonder how Santa comes in to drop off his presents.
  3. Some "magic" glitter bubble bath - Magic bubble bath so Santa can track your child down to deliver presents due to the magic glitter particles.
  4. A new set of Pj's - Perfect for those early morning Christmas photos as well as making sure your child is feeling comfortable when Santa drops those presents off.
  5. Some new socks - To keep those little toes warm when Santa visits as well as early morning unwrapping.
  6. New Books - The perfect stories to keep children entertained in the day time as well as before bedtime.
  7. New Dvds - The perfect little present for your child to watch in the day time.
  8. Some chocolate - A little treat for your little one to enjoy in the day time when watching a DVD.
  9. Christmas Plate - Preparation for Christmas day is important, this is something which your little one can eat there Christmas dinner on.
  10. A small soft toy Santa - I thought this would be a touch. Maxwell can take Santa to bed with him as well as read his bedtime story with him.
  11. A new towel - A special treat for Maxwell when he gets out of the bath
  12. A Christmas Sticker book - A activity to entertain Maxwell through Christmas eve.

As this is the first year of me doing the box for Maxwell, I had to buy everything as new however next Christmas there is nothing stopping me using the same box I bought this Christmas and using some items such as the DVD's and books to fill it up again. The contents of this box cost me less than £20 as I shopped for bargains, a few items in this box are also wins.

Will you be doing your children/yourself a Christmas Eve box and if so what will you be putting in it?

Tomy Play To Learn Review

Gifts For The Infant And Toddler

Marley the Musical Accordion - Marley is a cute bright coloured dog. Marley has a few special features that no other toy we have come across has, Marley is a Musical Accordion dog.  Marley can be played with as a four note accordion or pulled along. In Accordion mode we found Marley to be a little hard to use for Maxwell's small hands. Maxwell found it hard to push the 2 sides of Marley together and in the end he opted in to pushing one side of Marley into the floor so he could get a little sound out of him. As Maxwell continues to grow, I don't think this issue will be such a problem. On a brighter side, when Marley is pulled along by his string he makes a lovely clack sound and his body is animated by the squishy accordion movement. Maxwell loved pulling Marley along and especially loved it when I made Marley chase after him.

Mr Owl Pop Out Puzzles - Out of all the Play To Learn toys we received this is the toy which has kept Maxwell entertained the most. He simply loves every single thing about it. This simple toy is many toys in one! Mr Owl is a owl shaped toy which helps children learn shapes, colours, solve puzzles and enables children to make simple pictures. Mr Owl comes with 4 cubes which all have a different puzzle/activity to complete on each side. There are 5 different forest themed pictures to make with the 6th side of the cube revealing removable pieces for shape sorting.  If you press down on Professor Owl’s head, you are able to see him blink. Once the puzzles are complete if you push Mr Owl's head down again it makes the puzzle cubes fall out and your children then has to begin the puzzle fun all over again.

Cheesy Riders - This toy is incredibly bright which attracts younger eyes to it. It is simple to use and a lot of fun. It is a little pull along toy which features 3 mice. As you child pulls along the toy with the string your child is able to watch the 3 fun mice rise up and down. With every pull the mice rise up and down in turn and they make a ‘tick tick tack’ sound. Maxwell really enjoyed playing with this toy. He loved watching the mice go up and down and squealed in delight when he learnt the mice can be removed from the toy. Once removed they can be played with in imaginary play or rattled and shaken.

Parragon Book Buddies - Thank You For Being My Friend

Gifts For The Little Book Worm

I always enjoy reading books to Maxwell, I believe they help him with his speech development however since he has got older he always likes to make his own little mark when I am reading a book to him and he loves to get involved. As part of the Parragon Book Buddies we are sent a different book to look at and review each month. This month we were sent a book called "Thank you for being my friend". Thank you for being my friend comes in a lovely little gift box. Inside the box is a cuddly giraffe teddy and a small hardback book.

After lunchtime Maxwell and I sat down and got the book and the cuddly toy out. We learnt the cuddly giraffe's name was called Cleo. We carefully read the book together and Maxwell enjoyed snuggling up to the giraffe. It was the perfect tale to read to Maxwell just before nap time. The book tells a story about adventures and a great friendship. It teaches children not to be scared, it is a heart-warming story.

The box is very well presented and would make the perfect gift for Christmas for that special little one.The cuddly toy is very soft and is small enough for you to put in your child's rucksack along with the hardback book.

Overall we loved reading Thank you for being my friend. It is a heart warming story suitable for any little book worm. To buy Thank you for being my friend please visit this link.

OLPRO Witley Melamine Set Review

Gifts For The Adventurous One

As a child I always enjoyed camping holidays with my parents. They owned a caravan which meant we got to travel around the UK on fun breaks and we had a lot of adventures. Since having Maxwell, Ben and I have been unable to go on any big holidays, so recently Ben and I have discussed going on a UK holiday next year which would involve us camping.

Recently OLPRO got in contact with us to offer us a chance to review their Witley Melamine Set. The beautiful 8 peice set features the colours Red, Black & Grey and is a new set which has been designed for OLPRO for 2013. The set itself is very eye catching and is something which I would love to be seen with in the camping season.

The Witley Melaine set includes:

2 x 10" Plates (25.5cm diameter)

2 x 8" Plates (20cm diameter)

2 x Bowls (15.5cm diameter)

2 x Mugs (7.5cm diameter, 9.5cm tall)

This set is a good size set which makes it ideal for families. Not only is the set perfect for using on camping holidays, it would also be great to use at BBQ's in your own back garden, a picnic in the forest and would be the perfect set to  take to the beach in the summer when you have that summer BBQ.

The set is a good quality item which is made well. It is dishwasher safe and I have also found it is great for children. It is completely child friendly and does not seem easy to break. The perfect thing about this set is that you are able to buy individual pieces, this is perfect if you loose any of the set or if you are just looking to add a few items to the set you already have.

This is a perfect set this Christmas for any adventurous family.  The set is priced at just £18.99 which I think is a great price for something which will last a long time but also looks beautiful and eye catching. To find out more info and to see what other products OLPRO have to offer, please check out the official website here.

Thornton Chocolate Gift Review

Gifts For The Chocoholic!

At Christmas I always think the perfect present for someone is something you know they will enjoy, and something which many people I know enjoy is chocolate. A few weeks ago we were sent some lovely Thornton's gifts to enjoy over the Christmas period and so far we have definitely enjoyed them. We were sent: A Christmas box jammed full of chocolates, a beautiful chocolate snowman for Maxwell and a favourites box for us all to tuck into and enjoy.

Snowman Chocolate Model
As a child I used to adore watching the Snowman film at Christmas. It got me in the festive feeling and I loved the music that used to go along with the film, it was a fantastic tradition at Christmas which was part of my childhood. This Christmas Maxwell was given a Snowman pop up book and loved it, so it was a lovely surprise to see that Thornton's had kindly sent over Maxwell a Snowman model with a plaque that read his name. The personalisation on this product made it that little bit special for Maxwell as he was able to see that it was his.
The model is available to buy for £6.99 which I believe is a great price. The model is not just great for children it is also great for adults this Christmas. It is a great size and would make the perfect stocking filler.

100 Chocolate Indulgences
This box is something which any family would be happy to receive this Christmas. Shocked was not the word as I pulled the box out of the parcel. It is the largest box of chocolates I have ever seen, with 100 chocolates, 20 different flavours and 5 trays filled with chocolate there is sure to be something for everyone to enjoy.
Many chocolates which are included in the box are "limited edition" and as a huge Thornton's fan I have never actually come across them so this was a added bonus. Limited edition chocolates included - Black Forest Gateau, Sherry Triffle, Almond Frost and Jolly Orange as well as a few others. I can honestly say the chocolates were delicious and I was extremely impressed!
The box is priced at £39.99 which is quite expensive for some on a tight budget however for a box of chocolates which has a weight of 1263g, I think this is a reasonable price.

Favourites Hamper
This hamper is the perfect gift for someone who loves lots of little treats and doesn't like to eat things in one go! The box is packed with a Classics Milk Caramel Bag, Assorted Toffee Bag, Vanilla Fudge Bag, Continental Milk, White & Dark Bag. The whole hamper caters for every one and would make a great stocking filler or a present for children, adults or even work colleagues. The box is priced at just £9.99 which I think is reasonable. It is presented well and the contents of the hamper taste divine.

Tow Truck Tim and Rolling Ray Wow Toy Review

Gifts For The Little One

Maxwell is a typical little boy who loves to play with cars. He spends a few hours a day whizzing around the lounge playing with different cars. This week Maxwell was in for a treat when he was sent a Tow Truck Tim and Rolling Ray from WOW Toys.

Tow Truck Tim and Rolling Ray are a fantastic lorry and car duo. They are brightly coloured, large enough for toddler hands and robust. These toys offer hours of fun for children. At the age of 2, this toy encourages Maxwell to explore and learn.

The toy is easy to use, there is a magnetic winch which connects to the car, once connected it pulls it onto the truck when your child holds down a green button on the trailer. To release the car you need to drop down the click opening tailgate and press the red button and watch as Ray rolls back down ready for action.

There are many features which I love about this toy including that it requires no batteries. This is fantastic for us as we normally spend a fortune on batteries for Maxwell's toys and it is not always convenient to go and buy them. Another feature I also  like is that on the tow truck and the car the window screens open which enables you to put the 2 characters in so it looks like they are driving the cars around when Maxwell is pushing them along.

Maxwell really enjoyed playing with Tow Truck Tim and Rolling Ray. So far he has spent hours playing with the toy and getting to grips with all 13 different features it has to offer. As a parent I was so impressed with the toy I have actually bought some more WOW toys from the range for Maxwell to enjoy this Christmas.

You are able to purchase and find out more about Tow Truck Tim who is available from Amazon. Wow Toys would also love to see you over on there Facebook and Twitter pages.

Country Basket Cake Stand Review

Gifts For The Food Lover

This week saw Maxwell have his 2nd Birthday, a Birthday which was filled with a lot of happiness and joy. We threw Maxwell a lovely Birthday which was attended by some of our family. I wanted to make his Birthday that extra bit special so I decorated the house a little and decided to have a key piece on the table which everyone would see as they walked into our lounge - A cake stand filled with cupcakes.

The lovely people over at Country Baskets sent us the cake stand and at first I was a little surprised with it. Before getting the stand I expected it to come in a box, and me having to build it however upon opening the box on its arrival I found that the stand was all ready built and ready to go and could not be dismantled. At first this did cause me a few problems due to having limited storage but since then it has found a home in my kitchen.

The stand itself is a 2 tier stand. It is fairly large and I managed to fit a large amount of cakes on the stand when hosting Max's party. The white stand is made of a metal material and I think it would stand a lot of wear, the metal itself is easy to clean and has a nice finish around the edges making it safe to use around children. The stand features a beautiful unique design which is very eye catching.

People who attended our party commented on the stand and when I mentioned that the cake stand was priced at just £13.64 they seemed a little surprised. I am looking forward to using the stand all year round including this Christmas when people come round for a mince pie and a hot drink.

My 1st Years Personalised Gift Sack

Gifts For The Family

I always like to prepare for special occasions and this year  was not an exception. I started Christmas shopping in January and I even went as far as buying a Christmas tree, decorations and wrapping paper as it was cheap in the sale but there was something missing which we did not manage to get Maxwell. That missing thing was a Christmas sack!

Recently My 1st years kindly offered to send Maxwell a special Christmas sack which he could use to store his presents in when Father Christmas came to visit. The sack we were sent was a Blue Hessian Gift Sack. The sack came with a blue star on the front, the sack also had your child’s name printed on the star, you were able to change the colour of the name on the star however we went for a white colour. The clever thing about having your child's name on the sack is that your little one will always know which sack of presents under the tree is theirs.

The sack is large enough to fit plenty of presents inside. There is a special feature about this sack however and this feature is that it features a draw string which means it is easy to hang up at Christmas but after Christmas the sack can then be used to store toys in a playroom or be used as a laundry bag.

The sack really stands out due to its unique design and I love the fact that the sack can be reused over and over again. The sack also appeals to me as it does not have cartoons or pictures all over it and I think it is something which Maxwell can easily grow up with. The sack is made brilliantly and is stitched well.

The personalised sack is available to buy from My 1st Years and cost's just £15. The sack also comes in a beautiful gift box which makes it that little bit more special when you open it. The sack is a perfect present for young children, older children and even adults who want to make there Christmas a little unique this year.

Logo Board Game Review

Gifts For The Games Lover

Family time recently has been neglected due to our family's busy lifestyles, however last week we managed to have a small get together and we had a fun night in thanks to the brilliant board game Logo. I was extremely excited to review this game as it was something I had wanted to play since the game had first come out.

Logo is a game for 2-6 players or 2 teams and is suitable for the ages 12 - adult. Our family opted to play in 2 teams as we found this would be a easier way of playing. We split the teams into girls and boys and found we had a fun but competitive game.

The game was easy to play. Each team took it in turns to travel round the board of purple, yellow, green, and red spaces. What colour space you move to is based on correctly answered questions. We moved squares and answered questions until we reached the winning zone in the centre.

The questions are based on logos, products and packaging of well-known brands. There are three types of question card: Picture cards, Pot luck cards and Common theme cards. We found we knew most of the logos on the picture cards however at times both teams managed to get stuck on some of the answers on the Pot luck cards.

This Christmas we have agreed to sit down and play the game again. As a parent who does most of the shopping in my household I think I had a small advantage to someone like Ben who hates shopping and enjoys sitting down and switching off into his music in his spare time. Seeing as the boys took a beating from the girls, they are brushing up on there logo skills and are looking to beat us girls this Christmas.

We found this game was suitable for all ages of adults, especially as some of the logos were brands which had disappeared a while ago, much to my parents liking.  Although this game is not suitable for younger children, I think this game will make the perfect stocking filler for adults/teenagers this Christmas or will make your Christmas Eve/Day fun.

For more information please visit the Drumond Park website for stockists and to see their full range of games available.
