Top Tips To Keep Your Children Cool In The Sun

Maxwell has been a little fussy since this hot weather settled in so as a parent I have been trying my hardest to keep him happy and cool at the same time. Here are some of my top tips to keep children cool this summer.

Keep the curtains drawn - In the summer we like to keep the curtains closed. We do this so the sun does not shine into the house and create heat. Simply by shutting the curtains and leaving the windows closed in the day can keep the house a lot cooler. At night keeping the curtains closed but leaving the windows open will make the house a lot cooler. We have recently purchased Maxwell some blackout curtains, they are great in the summer months as not only do they keep the light out when it is time for bed but they are also great at keeping the heat out.

Always make sure your child is wearing loose fitted clothing - I always make sure Maxwell is in loose fitted clothes in the summer months. I believe this keeps Maxwell cooler in the day time. At night I put Maxwell in a simple vest and he sometimes has the option to wear shorts. I normally give Maxwell a cotton blanket to go over at him at night. I have found that if he did not wear any clothing he would actually get hotter and this would leave him hot and bothered in the day time and unable to sleep at night.

Wet play is fun! - Maxwell has been enjoying lots of water themed activities in this hot weather. From having fun in his paddling pool, to sensory themed water activities, to cool baths, Maxwell is a huge fan of keeping cool in the summer. When having fun in water please make sure your child is covered up. We have recently purchased Maxwell a fantastic swimsuit which keeps him covered from the sun. Maxwell also has a lot of sun cream put on him before enjoying any outside water activities. The last thing you want is for your child to be burnt.

Keep things calm - In this weather I find that Maxwell can get hot and irritated and a 10 mile hike is not going to keep him happy and cool instead I am a big fan of relaxing however relaxing does not mean that your child can not have fun. In this hot weather I have found card games, magazines, coloring books and reading books have been my best friend. Not only are these activities learning activities but they are also activities which involve sitting down and keeping cool.

Let your child have food choices - Maxwell has been off his food recently so I have been allowing Maxwell to choose what he would like to eat. Maxwell's favorite food at the present moment is salad, pizza and fruit. Maxwell has also enjoyed snacking on sandwiches, crackers and cheese and of course ice lollies. I have found giving Maxwell a choice makes meal times much easier. If Maxwell does not want to eat a meal I will encourage him to at least have a snack. I also encourage Maxwell to keep well hydrated in this weather and I like to keep his juice/water cooled in the fridge.

A Week Of Learning And New Experiences

  1. Maxwell has got very good at identifying things
  2. Maxwell is thrilled to be going to see Peppa Pig's Big Splash
  3. Maxwell is really enjoying the sun and loves to play in the garden
  4. Maxwell dislikes loud noises and hates flies
  5. Maxwell loves eating fruit at the moment in the hot weather
Maxwell has got very good at identifying things this week. When asked a simple question like "where is the hairbrush", Maxwell will go and find it and present it to me. Maxwell can now identify many things however his speech is still not quite there however it is coming on leaps and bounds and Maxwell is saying more words each week. Maxwell's words are also becoming more clearer.

Maxwell is a huge fan of Peppa Pig and if I allowed him to, he would watch her all day. Over the last few weeks I have been trying very hard to win Maxwell some Peppa Pig Big Splash Tickets, she will be visiting Southampton in October and she will be doing a live show at the theatre. After looking into the cost of tickets I found it would cost over £30 for just me and him to go, I knew I had to take Maxwell so I set about trying to win some tickets for him! Fortunately I did and in October Maxwell will be going to see Peppa's live show.

This week has seen Maxwell spend a lot of time in the garden. Maxwell loves roaming the garden and enjoys playing in his playhouse, riding his bike and playing on his happy hopper.  It's lovely to see him play in the garden. Maxwell did have a tiny accident which saw him fall off his bike and get a grazed arm and leg - his first grazes.

This week I had a treadmill delivered in the hope I may loose some weight. The treadmill is quite loud when it is running and Maxwell hates the noise.  He screams and cries which means I have been using it in the evening when he is asleep. Maxwell also was attacked by a fly this week and he hated it buzzing around him. He ran out into the garden and refused to come back in until the fly I had made its way out.

With this hot weather Maxwell has gone off a lot of hot meals so he has been eating a lot of salad and fruit.  Maxwell now eats a wide range of fruit which is wonderful and especially enjoys raspberries and grapes. I have been making him fruit skewers to enjoy and buying him a lot of juicy fruit.

A Week Of Learning And New Experiences

  1. Maxwell is making a lot more sounds
  2. Maxwell enjoys going for walks
  3. Maxwell has started having tantrums
  4. Maxwell gets more helpful everyday
  5. Maxwell is coping well with the hot weather.
Maxwell has been making a lot more sounds this week. He still is not able say words however he does try. He can say Mumma and Dadda but he now tries to say car often as well as the word NO! He has also become more giggly and a little more screechy!

Maxwell has finally found his feet and is enjoying walking around outside. He has been going up and down the road and is very good at holding hands. He does not run off and gets excited about brushing past trees and plants. Its lovely to see him enjoying the sun.

Maxwell has been having tantrums over the last week which are not nice. They are not everyday but they are over silly things, only yesterday did he have a tantrum over a cake which ended up in the bin. He gets put in his cot and is told it is wrong so I am hoping it is something he will grow out of soon. Until then I will have to grin and bare his outbursts.

Although the tantrums have been a pain Maxwell is still very helpful around the house. He gets smarter each day and shows a interest in helping out around the house. This week he has learnt to help get his breakfast ready each morning and throws his rubbish in the bin, however I am a little scared he keeps putting other things in the bin as things keep going missing.

This hot weather is not fun for anyone but Maxwell has coped well.  He has been drinking a lot of juice and has been chomping on lots of cold fruit and salad items. His favorite thing to eat is juicy cucumber. Maxwell enjoys going out for walks in the sun however he hates wearing a hat. It is hot in the house so Maxwell enjoys sitting and playing with toys.

  1. Maxwell has started eating cereal
  2. Maxwell has his own purse
  3. Maxwell has a special box where he is able to put his special items
  4. Maxwell visited Whitley Village
  5. Maxwell is enjoying the sun
Maxwell has always been a bit funny about eating food since he refused to eat when I fed him. Since then he enjoys to eat only dry foods which he can handle. Its been a pain finding him foods to enjoy however he loves fruit, salad and Veg which is the main thing.
This week I tried Maxwell with some All-Bran cereal dry. Maxwell really enjoyed it.

Maxwell has always shown a interest in my purse however bits kept going missing when he played with it. recently A.Rachel dug out a little purse for him to play with. Its not great- It has girly flowers all over it, however it has helped Maxwell learn to put things in his purse and also helped him learn how to open and close the zip.

This week I have been tripping over Maxwell's smaller toys, so I decided to buy him a special box to put them in to keep them all safe. I bought him a small Lego brick which is very bright and Maxwell loves it.

A new shopping center opened this week and Maxwell and I went to visit. Maxwell had a great time shopping and he also went and had his feet measured. His feet still have not grown so he is not needing any new shoes as of yet.

The weather has improved a lot and Maxwell is enjoying the sun. We have been out on his trike and we have also spent the afternoon round A. Rachels playing in the garden with Ronnie the rabbit. Maxwell loves running around outside and he loves kicking a ball.
